Chicago's harsh winter has put a chill into drivers' relationships with their cars.
Shiela Dietz plans to trade in her 2008 Volkswagen Passat for an all-wheel drive as soon as she finds a dealer willing to. The car has been stuck in her Lincoln Park garage most of the winter, causing her to take cabs to some appointments and to reschedule others.
When she finally got the car out last month, she hit an ice bump in the alley and a hunk of trim came loose.
"I have it duct-taped to my very nice car," says Ms. Dietz, 62, an independent real estate broker and appraiser in Chicago.
Subzero temps have caused Christopher Larson to look askance at his beloved Saturn Ion, whose ignition jams up in super-cold weather. "I've had to thaw the car using a space heater or jumping it to free everything up," says Mr. Larson, 33, president of WICA Technologies Inc., a Hainesville-based tech consulting firm. The ignition glitch gives him pause about what he otherwise considers a good car purchase. "Had I known about it, I wouldn't have bought it. It's my only complaint."
Mr. Larson and Ms. Dietz aren't alone in wanting to reinvent their wheels: Lease-trading activity in the Chicago area is up 6% to 10% this year over last, according to a spokesman for Florida-based LeaseTrader.com, a Web site that lets people trade car leases.
Most customers are trading flashy sports cars for more substantial SUVs or all-wheel drives, a pattern that emerged last summer, even when gas prices were sky-high: "People were planning for winter," he says.
