Men vs. women: Who keeps more car clutter?

The longer and brighter days that come with spring – the first official day of the season is today – is encouraging many to give their homes and cars a good spring cleaning. And carwashes that offer detailing services, such as interior vacuuming and shampooing, can hardly keep up with business.
“A lot of people are detailing their cars more than in the past because of the bad winter we had,” said Ralph Sherman, who owns Ralph’s Car Wash & Detail Center in Sycamore. “What I’ve also found with the economy the way it is today, people are keeping their cars longer. They’re doing more detailing right now rather than buying new.”
LeaseTrader.com, a Florida-based company that helps people transfer their car leases, released an unscientific survey this month, polling 2,000 customers and asking drivers about clutter in their vehicles. The survey found that women have more clutter than men, including items such as pens, CDs, snacks, makeup and paperwork.
Men, on the other hand, were found to have “a few extra papers and limited household items.”
Josh Henderson, a detail manager at Ralph’s, agreed with the survey.
“It’s not that women aren’t clean; they just don’t care about their car,” he said. “For men, it’s a priority.”
Bette Chilton, who was leaving the Kishwaukee Family YMCA with three other women on Thursday afternoon, also thought that men care more about their cars.
“My husband cleans my car,” she said. “He’s very meticulous.”
Though her blue Nissan Sentra appeared to be spotless, “this would be dirty to him,” she said with a laugh.
However, DeKalb mom Shawn Hanlon, who also runs a home-based day care, stuck up for womankind.
“Most guys’ cars I’ve been in are disastrous,” she said Thursday while watching the kids play at Hopkins Park in DeKalb. Her secret is that she keeps up with clutter before it becomes junk – and she’s taught her kids to bring their toys and garbage into the house after each outing.
To settle the score, Sherman said it’s a 50-50 split as far as clutter goes.
“We see a lot of minivans, for which the kids have turned into their second homes,” he said.
But on the other hand, he said, men who work in construction or in farm fields are more likely to track in mud and leave tools in their vehicles.
