The number of families selling car leases in order to share one family car has tripled over the last year, according to a survey conducted by LeaseTrader.com. The company, which matches people wanting to get out of a lease with people who want to take one over, says that the number of families sharing one vehicle is particularly high in California and Florida. It’s clear from figures recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau that consumers are cutting back on big-ticket items. Retail spending on building materials and automobiles were down by double digits compared to this time last year. However, spending on books, sporting goods and music rose by almost 2%, perhaps indicating that consumers are making many small purchases compared to one big one.
