CHARGES FILED IN I-PAD ROBBERY: Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a suspect accused of causing the amputation of a man’s pinky finger in connection with stealing the man’s newly-purchased iPad two weeks ago. Brandon Smith, 20, is charged with robbery and third-degree assault. The charges allege that on April 15, Smith grabbed a bag containing an iPad from a man who had just purchased it from an Apple store. The bag was wrapped around the victim’s hand, and the charges further allege that as Smith grabbed the bag there was enough force to tear away the skin from the pinky finger of the left hand. Smith remained in custody yesterday. His bond was set at $200,000.

PLANE HITS CAR: A Beachcraft Bonanza 35 skidded off the runway at Boulder Municipal Airport yesterday, hit a Toyota Prius, sheared off the left wing on a utility pole, then came to rest in a field where the pilot grabbed a black satchel from the plane and fled on foot, according to a report in the Boulder Daily Camera. Neither occupant of the Prius, Ken and Carol Marcoux, of Gunbarrel, was injured as the driver was able to accelerate before the plane struck the car, which damaged the rear of the Prius instead of hitting it directly in the front, according to the Camera. The pilot, 67-year-old Joe Curtis of Commerce City, returned later yesterday afternoon to meet with investigators, and there is no word on possible charges, according to the Camera.

BENNET INTRODUCES BILL THAT WOULD SET LIFETIME BAN ON MEMBERS OF CONGRESS FROM BECOMING LOBBYISTS: U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., yesterday introduced a bill that would ban Congressional lawmakers from ever becoming lobbyists. Bennet’s Bill, the Close the Revolving Door Act of 2010, comes on the heels of several examples of the outsized influence of special interests and lobbyists in Washington. Earlier this week, 1,500 Wall Street lobbyists led the charge to block a Wall Street reform bill that would improve transparency, strengthen consumer protections and protect the American taxpayer from bailing out the largest banks in the country, said Bennet’s office.

HOUSE PASSES IMPROVE ACT: U.S. Reps. Mike Coffman, R-Aurora, and Ed Perlmutter, D-Lakewood, yesterday applauded passage of a measure that would reform the Department of Defense’s procurement process, potentially saving taxpayers billions. The IMPROVE Acquisition Act aims at saving $135 billion over the next five years. The legislation is the result of a year-long study by the Defense Acquisition Reform Panel, of which Coffman was a member.

UDALL SIGNS LETTER TO PRESIDENT IN SUPPORT OF COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM: U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., yesterday signed onto a letter to President Obama outlining his support for immigration reform and encouraging Congress to move on the issue in 2010. Immigrant rights advocates praised Udall for signing the letter, arguing that the time is now for comprehensive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

WOMEN LOVER THEIR CARS THREE TIMES LONGER THAN MEN? What’s the honeymoon period on a car? LeaseTrader.com polled roughly 2,500 men and women and received some humorous feedback. The survey asked men and women how long they loved their car and when they finally realized the honeymoon period was over. For men, the average was four months until they started parking close to other cars (33 percent) and began transporting sports equipment in the backseat (22 percent). Women are over three-times more likely to stay in love longer with their car compared to men. The first rules women started breaking are letting their spouse drive their car (39 percent) and starting to car pool other kids (24 percent) for the first time.

AG ANNOUNCES 32-YEAR SENTENCE IN MAN SUSPECTED OF RUNNING MULTISTATE PONZI SCHEME: Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced yesterday that a Weld County District Court judge has sentenced Jason T. Brooks, 30, to 32 years in prison and ordered him to pay more than $5 million in restitution for his role in a multi-state Ponzi scheme. A grand jury indicted Brooks in June 2009 on suspicion that he accepted more than $10 million from investors in Boulder, Broomfield, Larimer and Weld counties and residents in 15 states outside of Colorado as part of a Ponzi scheme. Brooks took in the money to allegedly invest in an electronics resale business. Brooks, however, used new investors’ money to pay “interest” to other investors. He also used the money for personal expenses, including $1.5 million for personal gambling.

LEGENDARY COLORADO RANCH SELLS FOR $47M: BootJack Ranch in Telluride, considered among the very finest recreational ranches in the U.S., has been sold by owners David and Carol Brown of Paradise Valley, Arizona. Acquired by an entity known as Colorado LLC, the expansive ranch was sold last Wednesday for a final selling price of $46.5 million — a price point that is the highest known for a residential sale within the U.S. in the last 12 months. The property was most recently listed at $68 million.
