Do people who drive nicer cars get all the breaks? Not according to a survey from an online car leasing website, which finds the opposite is true. The less expensive your car, the more the driver feels he or she can get away with it when it comes to traffic violations.
It's a curious study that interviewed 2,000 drivers across the country and asked them about their likelihood of getting tickets for speeding, red light infractions, parking fines, and illegal u-turn violations. Then LeaseTrader.com compared that information with the kind of cars people drive.
The survey showed that luxury drivers across the board feel they get away with less compared with those of us who drive mid-size, SUV, or economy vehicles.
More than 63 percent of luxury car drivers, like those cruising in a BMW 7 Series, think they'll get a speeding ticket if they go even a few miles over the limit, because cops have it out for them.
Only 28 percent of those driving an economy model, like a Ford Focus, think they'll get caught for speeding.
John Sternal, with LeaseTrader, says people with luxury cars have a "sense of entitlement" when it comes to parking. Just over 72 percent of the high-end car owners said they would not get a ticket even if they parked illegally.
Even though red-light cameras don't discriminate, people driving economy cars think they're least likely to get caught. They feel their cars "blend in" so they're safe. Really? Can anyone driving an inexpensive car explain that rationale to me? Drivers of luxury vehicles think they're more likely to get tickets for running a red light, at 62 percent.
